Calendar for April 23 The Holy Martyrs Terentius, Africanus, Maximus, Pompey and Others
They suffered for Christ and were crowned with a crown of glory during the reign of Emperor Decius. By order of the emperor, the governor of Africa announced to all the people that everyone must offer sacrifices to idols; otherwise, the governor threatened anyone who persisted with terrible torture. Hearing these threats, many apostatized from the faith and worshiped idols. But these forty martyrs remained steadfast, for which they were subjected to torture. Saint Terentius encouraged his companions with the words: “Let us beware, brothers, that we do not deny Christ our God, and that He also does not deny us before His Father in heaven and the holy angels!” When they were led to be beheaded, they joyfully sang psalms and praised God, who had made them worthy of martyrdom. They suffered nobly and were made worthy of the empire in the year 250.
