Calendar for April 30 Venerable Simeon, Bishop of Persia
During the time of the wicked Emperor Savory, or Sapor, Simeon was tortured for Christ with two of his presbyters, Abdelaeus and Ananias. Before them, the emperor's eunuch Ustazan also perished, who had first denied Christ, and then, moved by the rebuke of St. Simeon, he again confessed the true faith before the emperor. Another 1,000 Christians were led to the execution with Simeon. Simeon struggled to the end, so that he would be the last to be beheaded, and so that he could encourage the Christians to the end, so that none of them would waver for fear of death. When the presbyter Ananias placed his head on the stump, his whole body trembled. And the emperor's eunuch, Fusicus, who was a secret Christian, began to encourage Ananias, saying: "Do not be afraid, old man, close your eyes and be courageous, so that you may see the divine light!" As soon as he said this, he was summoned as a Christian and accused to the emperor. The emperor put him to great torture, and likewise his daughter, the virgin Ascites. Finally, Saint Simeon was beheaded, after first sending his flock to the other world. The following year, on Good Friday, the emperor's favorite eunuch Azat was also killed for Christ, and with him a thousand other faithful. Then the emperor took pity on his eunuch and stopped further killing of Christians. All of them suffered honorably for Christ the King and Lord in 341 or 344.
