A native of Gora Savarat, from the tribe of Simeon. He lived in the 7th century before Christ, during the Judean king Josiah. A contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah. Having great modesty and a pure and God-raised mind, he received the gift of seeing into the future. He prophesied the day of God's wrath, the punishment of Gaza, Ascalon, Azotus, Akaron, Nineveh, Jerusalem, Egypt. He spoke about Jerusalem: "Woe to the renegade and defiled, violent city! It does not listen to voices, it does not receive knowledge, it does not trust in the Lord, it does not approach its God" (Zoph. 3, 1-2). And announcing the time of the coming of the Messiah, he shouts: "Sing, daughter of Zion; shout, Israel; rejoice and be glad with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem!" (Soph. 3, 14). He rested in his birthplace.
