Calendar for December 17 Saint Great Martyr Barbara
Dioscorus, a pagan from Heliopolis in Egypt, imprisoned his only daughter in a tower, from where she once came out and some Christian women told her the truth of the Christian faith. Then she drew a cross with her finger on the wall of the bathhouse, which was sunk into the stone as if it had been carved, and a spring of hot water gushed out from her foot on the floor, from which many were later healed. Dioscorus gave her to the governor Martianus to torture. In prison, the Lord appeared to her with angels. Seeing her, the woman Juliana herself reported that she was a Christian. Both were dragged around the city and their breasts were cut off. At the execution site, Dioscorus slaughtered his daughter, and the soldiers slaughtered Juliana. On the same day, lightning struck Dioscorus' house, killing him and Martianus. Saint Barbara suffered in 306. Her relics are in Kiev.
