Calendar for December 26 Saint German of Alaska
He was born in Russia in the 18th century. When he was twelve years old, he went to a monastery. Even as a boy, he lived an ascetic life. Even then, God miraculously healed him. Later, he moved to the Valaam Monastery, during the time of Abbot Nazarius, who, seeing the strength of his faith, sent him to be a missionary in America. German stayed in Alaska, on Spruce Island, near Kodiak, where he continued his ascetic life. He wore the same clothes in summer and winter, and over his clothes, a deerskin, which he did not take off or change for eight years. Around his neck he wore a chain with a large metal cross, weighing eight kilograms, and he slept in a coffin. He is the apostle of Orthodoxy in America. His relics are in the Church of the Resurrection in Kodiak.
