Calendar for December 28 Holy Hieromartyr Eleutherius
Born in Rome. His father was an imperial antipathist. His mother Antia, who was baptized by the Apostle Paul, gave him to the Bishop of Rome, Anicita, who ordained him a deacon at the age of 15, a priest at the age of 18, and a bishop at the age of 20. He was appointed Bishop of Illyria, with his seat in Valona, Albania. Emperor Hadrian sent Duke Felix to bring Eleutherius to him, but he converted to Christ. Eleutherius baptized him and together they went to Rome. The emperor subjected Saint Eleutherius to great torments: they roasted him, boiled him in pitch, and threw him into a fiery furnace. But God constantly delivered him. Seeing this miracle, the Roman eparchy Corybus also believed in Christ. All three were beheaded, and finally Mother Antia. They suffered in the year 120. Their bodies were transferred to Valona.
Saint Stephen the Confessor of Sourozh. Venerable Paul of Latra. Venerable Pardus the Hermit. Christmas Fast.
