Calendar for December 6 Saint Amphilochius of Iconium
Born in Caesarea Cappadocia, a countryman and friend of Saint Basil the Great. The mother of Saint Gregory the Theologian, Saint Nonna, was his paternal aunt. In his early youth, he withdrew to a cave, where he lived as a hermit for 40 years, and then he was miraculously chosen by God and consecrated by an angel as Bishop of Iconium. He participated in the Second Ecumenical Council. He zealously fought against the heresy of Macedon, and against the Arians and Eunomius. At his request, Emperor Theodosius expelled the Arians from all cities in the empire, thus cleansing the Church of these heretics. In addition to his many obligations, Saint Amphilochius also wrote several books on the faith. He gave up his soul to the Lord peacefully, in a very old age, in the year 395.
Saint Gregory, Bishop of Acraganthus. Saint Alexander Nevsky. Saint Metrophanes, Bishop of Voronezh. Feast of the Presentation of the Most Holy Theotokos. Christmas Fast.
