Calendar for February 23 Holy Hieromartyr Charalampius – (Beginning of Lent)
He was a bishop in Magnesia. He suffered for Christ in his 113th year. During the terrible persecution of Christians under Emperor Septimius Severus, Elder Charalampius publicly preached the faith of Christ. The persecutors subjected him to terrible tortures. In the end, they flayed him alive. But he endured all the tortures as if in someone else's body. He also said to the torturers: "I thank you, brothers, that by scraping off my old body you have renewed my spirit for a new, eternal life." While they were torturing him, he performed many miracles and converted many to the faith, among them the emperor's daughter Galina. On his deathbed, he prayed to God and gave up his spirit before the executioner lowered the sword to his neck. His body was taken by Galina and buried honorably. Saint Charalampius suffered in the year 202.
Venerable Prochorus the Lobodnik.
