Calendar for January 29 Honorary Chains of the Holy Apostle Peter
“And behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side, and woke him up, saying, ‘Stand up quickly!’ And his chains fell off his hands” (Acts 12:7). This day is dedicated to the memory of that event. Christians also kept the honorable chains of the Holy Apostle Peter because of their healing power. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Saint Juvenal, gave them to Empress Eudocia, the exiled wife of Emperor Theodosius the Younger. She cut them in half and sent one half to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, and the other half to her daughter, Empress Eudocia, the wife of Valentinian, in Rome. Eudoxia built the church of the Holy Apostle Peter in Rome and placed these chains in it, and with them the ones in which Nero had bound him just before he was crucified.
Holy Martyrs Pevsippus, Eleusippus, Maleusippus and their grandmother Leonilla. Venerable Martyr Damascene of Gabrovo. Venerable Romilus of Ravan.
