Calendar for January 3 Saint Martyr Juliana
Born in Nicodemus, of pagan parents, but having heard the gospel sermon, she turned to Christ with all her heart. She was engaged to the senator Eleusius. In order to reject him, she told him that she would not marry him unless he became the eparch of Nicomedia, which he achieved through bribery. Then she revealed to him that she was a Christian and he accused her to her father, who, having beaten her, handed her over to him for torture. They beat her until she bled and threw her into prison, where the Lord healed her. Then the eparch threw her into a red-hot furnace, but not even the fire harmed her. Seeing this miracle, about 500 men and 130 women converted to the faith of Christ. The evil eparchy cut them all down with the sword, and finally Saint Julian, in the year 304. And the eparchy of Eleusis, after a shipwreck, was torn to pieces by dogs on an island.
