Calendar for January 30 Venerable Anthony the Great
After the death of his wealthy parents, Anthony divided the inherited property with his minor sister and placed her in the care of relatives. He distributed part of his property to the poor and dedicated himself to an ascetic life. At first he practiced asceticism near his village, and later he withdrew to the desert, on the shores of the Red Sea, where, in prayer, reflection and contemplation, he spent twenty years as a recluse. His fame spread far and wide, and a multitude of disciples gathered around him. He died at the age of one hundred and five, in the year 335, leaving behind a whole army of disciples and those who imitated him. Although he was not educated, he was an advisor and teacher to the most learned people of that time. As much perfection as a person can achieve on earth, Saint Anthony achieved it.
Holy Emperor Theodosius the Great. Holy Martyr George the New, of Ioannina.
