Calendar for July 18 Venerable Athanasius of Athos
Born in Trapezunt. He lost his parents at an early age, but was taken in by a duke and sent to Constantinople for education. When he finished school, he went to the Malean Desert, near Mount Athos, as a student of the then famous Michael Malein. Then he moved to Mount Athos, to practice stricter asceticism. But soon monks and novices began to gather around him, and he began to build a monastery, the famous Lavra. He endured tremendous trials from both demons and people. He was granted the privilege of seeing the Most Holy Theotokos, who brought water from the rock and promised him that he would forever be the Abbess (Abbess) of the monastery. He died in 980 when the wall of a newly built narthex of a church collapsed on him and 6 other monks. After his death, he appeared to his brothers.
Venerable Martyr Cyprian the New. Venerable Lampadus. Saint Sergius of Radonezh.
