Calendar for July 19 Venerable Sisoes the Great
An Egyptian, a disciple of Saint Anthony the Great. After the repose of his teacher, he settled on a mountain called Anthony's, where Saint Anthony had previously practiced asceticism. Through hard labor, he tamed himself so much that he became as gentle as a lamb, and God gave him great grace to heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead. When asked how to attain humility, the saint replied: "When one practices recognizing every man as better than oneself, one thereby attains humility." He spent 60 years in the desert. Before his death, his face shone like the sun. The monks stood around and admired him. And when he breathed his last, the whole chamber was filled with a fragrant fragrance. Saint Sisoes gave up his soul to the Lord in 429, in great old age.
