Calendar for July 27 Saint Apostle Aquila
A Jew, one of the Seventy. He lived in Italy with his wife Priscilla. When the Jews were expelled from Rome, he moved to Corinth. The Apostle Paul baptized them and stayed in their home for a year and a half. From Ephesus, the Apostle Paul writes. “Aquila and Priscilla greet you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house” (I Cor. 16:19). And when they returned to Rome, the Apostle writes: “Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles; greet also the church that is in their house” (Rom. 16:3-4). And, chained in Rome, the Apostle writes again: “Greet Priscilla and Aquila” (II Tim. 4:19). Aquila, the bishop, was killed by the pagans.
