Calendar for July 8 Holy Martyr Fevronia
Daughter of Senator Prosphorus of Rome. To avoid marriage, she became a nun in a monastery in Assyria, where her aunt Bryena was abbess. Diocletian sent Lysimachus and his uncle Selina to the East to kill Christians. So they came to the city of Sivapolis, where there was a monastery with 50 virgins, among whom was Fevronia. Hearing that she was there, Selina ordered her to be brought to him. When the holy virgin did not want to renounce Christ, they flogged her, knocked out her teeth, cut off her arms, chest and legs, and finally beheaded her. An evil spirit entered Selina and, distraught, he hit his head on a pillar and died there. And Lysimachus, with many soldiers, was baptized. Saint Fevronia suffered in 310. Her miraculous relics were later transferred to Constantinople.
Venerable Dionysius. Peter's Day Fast.
