Calendar for July 9 Venerable David of Thessalonica
First, he practiced asceticism near Thessaloniki, on an almond tree, sitting on its branches. His disciples begged him to come down from the tree, to make him a cell. Only after 3 years, when an angel appeared to him and said that the Lord had granted him the humility and piety that he had sought through prayers, did he continue to practice asceticism in a hut under that same almond tree. He continued his asceticism in Thessaly. He purified himself so much through fasting, prayer, and vigilance that he was deigned to receive great grace from God. Once he put fire on his hand, put incense, and incensed the emperor, without suffering any harm. Seeing this, the emperor bowed down to him to the ground. He performed many miracles, with which he amazed people. He rested peacefully and passed into blessed eternity in the year 540.
