Calendar for June 17 Holy Hieromartyr Joannikije of Montenegro
Metropolitan Joannikije (Lipovac) was born in 1890 in Stoliv in the Bay of Kotor. He graduated from the Orthodox Theological Institute in Zadar and the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. As a widowed archpriest, he was elected Vicar Bishop of Budimlje in 1939. He received monastic tonsure in the Rakovica Monastery from Metropolitan Joseph of Skopje. He was ordained a bishop in 1940. In the same year, he was elected Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral. He governed the Montenegrin and Littoral Diocese in very difficult wartime times. Due to the persecution of his clergy, he tried to leave the country with seventy priests, but failed. The communists shot priests in Slovenia, and the Metropolitan was brutally murdered near Arandjelovac.
