Calendar for June 23 Holy Hieromartyr Timothy of Brus
In the city of Brus, on the border of Bithynia, Phrygia and Mysia, near Mount Olympus, Saint Timothy was a bishop. Because of the purity and holiness of his life, he received from God the gift of miracles. Once he killed a huge dragon, which had nested in a cave under a cypress tree, and was doing great harm to livestock and people. And he killed it in such a way that he inserted into its jaws the cover with which the consecrated bread is covered on the holy throne. On another occasion, he healed a certain emperor, named Aretas, who was suffering from a serious deadly disease. Likewise, he not only healed an empress who was dying, but also converted her from the darkness of idolatry to the light of the true faith. Moreover, by the grace bestowed upon him, he healed all kinds of diseases, and by the power of Christ he performed many miracles, and by his teaching he enlightened his flock, and converted many unbelievers to Christ.
And when Emperor Julian ascended the Roman throne, who renounced Christ and worshipped idols, and began to fiercely persecute the Church of God, then Saint Timothy especially labored in preaching the word of God, confirming the faithful in the faith and rebuking the pagans for their errors. Hearing about the saint, the pagan Emperor Julian ordered him to be arrested and brought to him, and then he threw him into prison. Many came to the bound saint in prison, and he taught them about Christ, the true God. Learning of this, Julian threatened the saint not to teach anymore in the name of Jesus. But Saint Timothy did not listen to the godless and lawless emperor, but continued fearlessly to do what he should do as a bishop: he taught the people. And when Emperor Julian again learned that Saint Timothy was fearlessly preaching about Christ, he became angry and sent an executioner to behead the saint in prison, in the year 362. After the blessed death of the hieromartyr, the faithful took his holy body and buried it honorably. From his grave many miraculous healings from various diseases and ailments were given, to the glory of Christ our God.
