Calendar for June 28 Holy Great Martyr Prince Lazar and the Holy Serbian Martyrs – Vidovdan
One of the great men who ruled the Serbian Empire after Emperor Dušan. After the death of Emperor Uroš, he was crowned by Patriarch Ephraim. He sent an embassy to Constantinople, with the monk Isaiah, with a request to lift the anathema from the Serbian people. He fought against the Turkish power several times. Finally, he clashed with the Turks, led by Sultan Murat, on the Kosovo Field in 1389, where he was beheaded. His body was transferred to the Ravanica Monastery near Ćuprija, his endowment, and later from there to Sremska Ravanica and finally, in 1942, to Belgrade, in the Cathedral Church, where he still rests incorrupt today. Saint Lazarus restored the monasteries of Hilandar and Gornjak, built Ravanica and Lazarica, and was the founder of many other monasteries and churches.
