Calendar for June 30 Holy Martyrs Manuel, Saul and Ishmael
Persians, brothers by birth, of a pagan father and a Christian mother. They were high officials under Emperor Alamundar, who sent them to Julian the Apostate to establish peace between the Persian and Greco-Roman empires. The Emperor Apostate held a festival for idols in Chalcedon, to which the holy brothers did not want to come. Then the emperor invited them to offer sacrifices to the idols. They told him that they were foreign subjects, that they were Christians and that they would not worship dead idols. Then they were tied naked to trees, beaten and scraped with iron brushes. But an angel of God took away their pain. Then they were cut down. The Persian emperor raised a large army, and Julian, confident of victory, went against the Persians. However, he was beaten to the ground and lost his head there.
Venerable Pior.
