Calendar for June 7 The Third Finding of the Head of Saint John the Baptist – (Epiphany) All Souls’ Day
The venerable head of Saint John the Baptist was hidden in a sacred place many years ago. According to a revelation to a priest, it was found in a silver casket. In the 8th century, during the time of the iconoclastic heresy, the head of Saint John the Baptist was transferred to Comane, in Cappadocia, the place where Saint John Chrysostom was exiled. But when iconoclasm was defeated, during the time of Emperor Michael and Patriarch Ignatius, in the year 850, the head of Saint John was transferred to Constantinople and placed there in the imperial court church. Venerable Theodore the Studite uttered a wonderful eulogy in honor of this third finding of the venerable head of Saint John the Baptist. Apparently, the holy head of the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord was also in his, the Studite Monastery.
