Calendar for March 13 Venerable Basil the Confessor
He became a monk in his youth and became a disciple of the Venerable Procopius the Decapolis. He devoted himself with all his being to monastic asceticism, so that when the time came, he would rise up against the iconoclasts and stand up for the veneration of holy icons. For this, he was captured and severely tortured. The iconoclasts scraped his entire body and neck, and then threw him into prison. His fellow sufferer was his teacher, Saint Procopius the Decapolis. When the iconoclasts, with their protector Emperor Leo the Isaurian, perished, by God's providence, he returned to the monastery with Procopius, where he continued his previous ascetic life. He inspired many sinners to repentance, both by his preaching and by his example. He reposed in peace at the end of the 8th century.
His Homilitor Proterius. His Homilitor Nestor. Saint Blessed Nicholas. Easter Lent.
