Calendar for March 26 Transfer of the relics of Saint Nicephorus of Constantinople
When Emperor Leo the Armenian spoke out against icons, Patriarch Nicephorus of Constantinople opposed him and slandered him. For this reason, the emperor exiled him to the island of Prokonis, where Saint Nicephorus had already built a monastery in honor of Saint Theodore. After 13 years, in 827, Patriarch Nicephorus died. When all the iconoclastic emperors died and when Michael ascended the imperial throne with his mother Theodore, and Patriarch Methodius was restored to the patriarchal throne, in 846, the relics of Saint Nicephorus were transferred from Prokonis to Constantinople, first to the church of Saint Sophia, from which he had been exiled during his lifetime, and then to the church of the Holy Apostles. On the same day that he was exiled from Constantinople, after 19 years, his incorrupt relics were transferred to that city.
