Calendar for March 3 Saint Leo of Rome – Beginning of Easter Lent
Born in Italy. He was an archdeacon under Pope Sixtus III, after whose death he was elevated to the papal throne. He saved Rome from the Huns by appearing before Attila, who saw the apostles Peter and Paul next to him threatening him with flaming swords. He helped save Orthodoxy from the heresy of Eutyches and Dioscorus. At the Fourth Ecumenical Council, they read his epistle, which he had previously placed on the tomb of Saint Peter, who had corrected it. Before his death, he spent 40 days in fasting and prayer at the tomb of Saint Peter, begging him to tell him whether his sins had been forgiven. The apostle told him that all were forgiven except for the sin in the ordination of priests. He continued to pray until those sins were forgiven and he peacefully gave up his soul to the Lord in 461.
Saint Flavian of Constantinople.
