Calendar for May 16 Holy Martyrs Timothy and Mavra
A bride and groom. Twenty days after their wedding, they were brought to trial in Thebaid, before the governor Arians, for their faith in Christ. Arians said to Timothy: “Do you not see the instruments of torture around you?” And he replied: “And do you not see the angels of God who strengthen me?” Then they pierced his ears with an iron rod so that his pupils bulged out from the pain. Then they hung him upside down and put a tree in his mouth. Mavra was at first afraid of the torture, but her husband encouraged her. They pulled out her hair and cut off her fingers. Finally, they were crucified on crosses, facing each other, where, encouraging each other, they remained for 9 days, and then they gave up their spirits to the Lord. These two wonderful martyrs suffered for Christ in the year 286, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.
