Calendar for May 4 Holy Martyr Empress Alexandra
The wife of Emperor Diocletian, Empress Alexandra, seeing the fearless suffering and glorious miracles of the Holy Great Martyr George, believed in Christ and suffered for Him together with the Holy Great Martyr, which is discussed in more detail in the Life of Saint George under April 23. The servants of Empress Alexandra: Apollos, Isaac and Quadratus, believed in Christ when they saw the miracles of the Holy Great Martyr George and their Empress renouncing the Emperor and the Empire, believing in Christ and suffering for Him. They slandered the Emperor, calling him a criminal and a beast, because he did not even spare his wife, with whom he had children. The Emperor, enraged by this, ordered them to be thrown into prison, and all night he plotted how to put them to death. The next day he brought them out of prison, and ordered that Codratus be beheaded. Apollos and Isaac were returned to prison. After many days they died in prison from hunger and thirst, and they gave up their holy souls into the hands of God, and received from God the crowns of martyrdom.
Holy Hieromartyr Januarius. Holy Martyr Theodore.
