Calendar for May 7 Saint Martyr Sava Stratilatos
During the time of Emperor Aurelian, this glorious Sava lived in Rome, and held the rank of duke. He was of Gothic descent. He often visited Christians in prisons and helped them with his property. Because of his great purity and fasting, God gave him power over unclean spirits. When he was accused of being a Christian, he boldly stood before the emperor, threw down his military belt before him, and publicly confessed Christ the Lord. He was tortured with various tortures, whipped, scourged with iron, and burned with candles. But he did not succumb to these deadly tortures, but appeared alive and well. His fellow soldiers, seeing clearly that God was helping Sava, accepted the faith of Christ. Seventy of them were immediately beheaded by order of the emperor. Christ the Lord Himself appeared to Saint Sava in prison in great light and strengthened His martyr. Then Sava was sentenced to death by immersion in water. And he was thrown into a deep river, where he gave up his soul to God in the year 272. And his soul went to the Lord, to whom he remained faithful in many torments.
