Calendar for November 24 Saint King Stefan of Decan – Mratindan
Son of King Milutin and father of Emperor Dušan. By order of his uninformed father, he was blinded in his youth, and by order of his reckless son, he was drowned in his old age. When he was blinded, Saint Nicholas appeared to him in the temple on Ovče polje, who showed him his eyes: “Stephen, do not be afraid, here are your eyes in the palm of my hand; in due time I will restore them to you.” He was thrown into captivity in the Pantokrator Monastery in Constantinople. With his asceticism and wisdom, meekness and piety, patience and forbearance, Stephen surpassed not only all the monks in the monastery, but also all of Constantinople. After five years, Saint Nicholas appeared to him again and – he regained his sight. Out of God's grace, he built Visoke Dečani. He died a martyr in 1336.
