Calendar for October 13 Holy Hieromartyr Gregory
A relative of the Persian emperor Artabanus and the Armenian Kursar. When these imperial houses went to war with each other, Gregory went to Caesarea Cappadocia, where he learned the faith of Christ, was baptized and married. He dedicated both his sons, Ortan and Arostanus, to the service of the Church. When his wife died, he returned to Armenia and placed them in the service of Emperor Tiridates. The emperor, learning that he was a Christian, put him to torture and threw him into a deep pit. But God preserved Gregory there for 14 years. When Tiridates killed 37 nuns in a monastery, he went mad. He appeared to his sister in a dream that she would not recover until she pulled Gregory out of the pit. Gregory healed and baptized Tiridates. They elected him bishop of Armenia, which he enlightened with the faith of Christ. He died of old age around the year 335.
The Holy Martyrs Gayania, Hripsimias, and thirty-five other nuns. Saint Michael, first Metropolitan of Kiev.
