Calendar for October 13 Saint Gregory the Martyr
A relative of the Persian emperor Artabanus and the Armenian Kursar. When these imperial houses went to war with each other, Gregory went to Caesarea Cappadocia, where he recognized Christ's faith, was baptized and married. He dedicated both sons, Ortan and Arostan, to the service of the Church. When his wife died, he returned to Armenia and entered the service of Emperor Tiridates. The emperor, finding out that he was a Christian, tortured him and threw him into a deep pit. But God preserved Grigori there for 14 years. When Tiridates kills 37 nuns in a single monastery, they go crazy. His sister was told in a dream that she would not recover until she took Grigory out of the pit. Gregory heals and baptizes Tiridates. They elected him bishop of Armenia, which he enlightened with the faith of Christ. He died in old age around 335.
Holy Martyr Gaiania, Ripsimi and thirty-five other nuns. Saint Michael, the first Metropolitan of Kiev.
