Calendar for October 16 Holy priest-martyr Dionysius the Areopagite
He is counted among the 70 minor apostles. After graduating from the school of philosophy in Athens, he went to Egypt, where he was when the Lord Jesus died on the cross. When he returned to Athens, he married Damara. He was a member of the highest court of the Greeks, the Areopagus. He was baptized, along with his whole household, by the apostle Paul, who, when he left his wife and children, made him bishop of Athens. He met all the apostles, he also met the Blessed Virgin Mary, which he later described. When the apostle Paul suffered, he went to Gaul where he brought many people to Christ. When he was 90 years old, he was tortured for Christ's sake, together with priest Rusticus and deacon Eleftherius. All three were cut with a sword in 1996. Saint Dionysius wrote many famous works.
