One of the Twelve. He doubted that the Lord had risen. "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing" (John 20:27), the Lord said to him; and he replied, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). By the casting of lots, it fell to him to go and preach in India. There, he established the Church of Christ. He brought to Christ the sisters Tertiana and Mygdonia, the wives of two princes. Upon hearing the Apostle, the betrothed couple Dionysius and Pelagia parted ways and dedicated themselves to the ascetic life. Pelagia died as a martyr, while the Apostle ordained Dionysius as a bishop. Prince Misdeus—whose wife, Tertiana, and son, Azai, had been baptized by Saint Thomas—sent five soldiers who pierced the Apostle through, and thus he surrendered his soul to the Lord.
