Calendar for October 23 Holy Martyrs of Zograf
Emperor Michael Palaeologus concluded the Union of Lyons with the Pope in order to receive military aid from him in the fight against the Bulgarians and Serbs. The monks of Mount Athos called on the Emperor to reject the Union and return to Orthodoxy. The Latin army invaded Mount Athos, hanged the entire Protatus and killed many monks. When they attacked Zograf, Abbot Thomas told the brethren that whoever wanted to leave the monastery, and whoever wanted a martyr's death, let him stay. And so 22 monks remained, with their abbot, and 4 monastery workers. The Latins set fire to the tower in which they had locked themselves, and all of them died a martyr's death in the fire. They gave up their holy souls to God in 1283. In the same year, the wicked Tsar Michael also died, against whom the Serbian King Milutin rose up.
