Emperor Michael Palaeologus concluded the Union of Lyons with the Pope, in order to receive military aid from him for the fight against the Bulgarians and Serbs. The monks of Svetogorje called on the Tsar to reject the Union and to return to Orthodoxy. The Latin army invaded Mount Athos, hanged the entire Protatus and killed many monks. When they attacked Zograf, abbot Thomas told the brothers that whoever wants to leave the monastery, and whoever wants to die as a martyr, should stay. And so there remained 22 monks, with their abbot, and 4 monastery workers. The Latins set fire to the tower in which they had shut themselves, and they all met a martyr's death in the fire. They surrendered their holy souls to God in 1283. In the same year, the wicked Emperor Mihail died, against whom Serbian King Milutin rose up.
