Calendar for October 29 Holy Martyr Longinus Sotnik
"And the captain and those with him guarding Jesus, seeing that the earth was shaking and what would happen, were very afraid, saying: Truly this was the Son of God" (Mt. 27, 54). That captain was Longinus. He was the chief of the soldiers who were on Golgotha when the Lord was crucified, and the chief of the guard that guarded the Holy Sepulchre. The Jewish elders failed to bribe him to say that Christ was not resurrected but that the disciples had stolen him, so they wanted to kill him. Then Longinus was baptized, together with two of his soldiers, and went with them to Cappadocia, then to the village, to his father's name, where he spent his time in fasting and prayer. Pilate sent soldiers to cut him down. His head was taken to Pilate, who gave it to the Jews, who buried it in a garbage dump.
Venerable Longinus the Industrious.
