Calendar for October 3 Saint Great Martyr Eustathius
The great Roman general Placidus. Once, while hunting, a cross appeared to him among the antlers of a deer and he heard a voice calling him to be baptized. At baptism, he was named Eustathius, his wife Theopistia, and his sons Agapius and Theopist. Then he went away to Egypt, where a barbarian kidnapped his wife and his children were taken by wild beasts. Then he lived in the village of Vadisis for 15 years as a mercenary. When the barbarians attacked the Roman Empire, Emperor Trajan sent for him. His comrades found him and he defeated the barbarians. On his return to Rome, he found his wife and sons. Trajan had already died and Hadrian became emperor, who asked Eustathius to offer sacrifices to idols. When he said he was a Christian, they put him to torture, along with his wife and children. They burned them in a red-hot ox.
Saint Michael, Prince, and Theodore, Boyar. Venerable Martyr Hilarion.
