He lived over 800 years before Christ. The son of that widow in Sarepta of Sidon, whom the prophet Elijah raised from the dead. When he grew up, he pleased God so much that he deserved the prophetic gift. He prophesied the sufferings of the Lord, the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world. When the Lord commanded him to go to Nineveh and prophesy, he disobeyed but wanted to run away from the Face of God. The ship in which he was escaping was hit by a great storm and the sailors threw Jonah into the sea. He was swallowed by a whale, in whose womb he repented, and after three days threw him out on land. By staying in the whale's belly for three days, Saint Prophet Jonah prefigured the three-day stay of the Lord Jesus Christ in the grave, and his salvation from the whale's belly is a foreshadowing of the Lord's Resurrection.
