Calendar for September 28 Saint Great Martyr Nicetas
A Goth, a disciple of Bishop Theophilus of Gothia, who participated in the First Ecumenical Council. When the Gothic prince Athanaric began to torture Christians, Saint Nicetas stood before him and rebuked him for it. Being subjected to terrible torments, the martyr of God confessed the faith of Christ more and more strongly and prayed to God with ever greater thanksgiving. On his chest, under his clothes, he held the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, because she appeared to him comforting him. And in his hands he held a cross. After much torture, he was thrown into the fire, where he gave up his soul to the Lord. But his body remained unharmed. His companion Marian transferred the relics of Saint Nicetas to the Cilician city of Mopsuesto, where he built a church dedicated to his name. Saint Nicetas suffered in 372.
