Calendar for September 29 Venerable Dorotheus
A native of Thewais. He lived in the desert near Alexandria, in the place of Kelia the Hermit. Venerable Palladius, bishop of Jelenopol, a disciple of Saint Dorotheus and an eyewitness to his exploits, writes in his "Lavsaik" that old Dorotheus spent 60 years in a cave, leading a very strict life. Throughout the day, even in the midday heat, he collected stones in the coastal desert and constantly built cells, giving them to those who could not build them themselves. He ate some dry bread and a handful of greens, and drank some water. Venerable Palladius says that he never saw him stretch his legs, that he lay down, but all night long he wove baskets from palm wicks and thus earned his bread. He died at the end of the 4th century.
