Calendar for September 30 The Holy Martyrs Vera, Nada and Ljubav and their mother Sophia
They lived and suffered in Rome. Sophia, a widow, had well established herself and her daughters in the faith of Christ. At the time when the torturing hand of Emperor Hadrian reached out to the virtuous home of Sophia, Vera was 12, Nada 10, and Ljubav 9 years old. When they were brought before the emperor, all four, holding hands, confessed their faith in Christ and refused to offer sacrifice to the idol goddess Artemis. When their suffering began, the mother encouraged her daughters and prayed to God that they would persevere to the end. The torturers subjected them to severe torments: they beat them, cut their flesh off them, threw them into fire and boiling pitch… In the end, all three sisters were beheaded. The mother buried the dead bodies of her daughters, remained at the grave for three days and nights, and then herself gave up her spirit to God.
Holy Martyr Agathoclea. Holy One Hundred and Fifty-Six Martyrs of Egypt. Holy Martyr Theodotia.
