Statement by the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral
Last night, the family home of priest Mijajlo Backović, the parish priest of Tivat, was attacked and the safety of the immediate family was threatened. Regardless of the fact that the burned car is not owned by the priest but was given to him by a friend for use in recent years, this method of attack reminds everyone of the dirty trail of criminal gangs. The intention of the criminals is to violate the safety of the priest, his wife and children, and this is a deeply anti-church act, which we loudly condemn and call on the competent state and local authorities to do everything possible to identify and sanction the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
Given the amount of lies, insinuations and slander that are being served against the Church and its clergy, which have especially intensified these days, something like this could have been expected.
We are confident that the competent authorities have the power to quickly shed light on this criminal act, and we once again appeal to all social actors to show the necessary responsibility in these difficult days full of trials and do everything possible to return peace and security to our homes.
