A LITTLE VENICE BEFORE THE CONCERT

The youth choir of the Serbian Singing Society "Jedinstvo" (1839) Kotor, with its conductor Ivana Krivokapić, today visited Venice, a unique city in the world, built on 118 small islands in the lagoon at the mouth of the Brenta River.

Canals, instead of streets, are an irreplaceable motif in the photos of tens of thousands of tourists who visit the city every day. Venice is decorated with a series of churches and palaces of first-class value that form a unique urban complex. The former capital of the Republic of Venice and its canals have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kotor choristers will hold a concert tomorrow, March 6, in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Ljubljana.

The audience will have the opportunity to enjoy the performance of young members of the choir, who cherish the rich tradition of choral and spiritual singing.

Below is a text about Venice from the website https://travelhouse.me/venecija/:

"What can we say about Venice that hasn't already been said? Perhaps we should point out one new thing: after 900 years of male dominance among Venetian gondoliers, a woman recently received a license to operate this vessel. It is about Đorđa Boscolo, who learned how to steer a narrow boat with one oar, how to overcome the windy Venetian canals, that is, how to avoid the tide and dangerous currents.

"Dominant" (La Dominante), "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Bridges", "City of Light", are some of the names by which Venice was known in the past. It is certainly unique: the level of the city is 40 cm above the sea, its canals have been declared World Heritage and many consider it the most beautiful city on the planet. This world jewel, with its 150 canals and four hundred bridges, spreads over 118 small islands in the swampy Venetian lagoon in the north of the Adriatic Sea.

In the 15th century, it was the center of world trade and the largest port city in the world. At the height of its power, in the late Middle Ages, Venice had 3,300 ships and 36,000 sailors, and during the 18th century it was considered the most elegant and beautiful city in Europe, which had a huge influence on art, architecture and literature. There is no city that famous people have written more about: Petrarch considered it "rich in gold, but even richer in fame" in the 14th century, Goethe thought that the City of Water could not be compared to any other, Dickens dreamed about it, and Thomas Mann declared it "the most incredible of all cities".

Marco Polo, Casanova and Titian were born there, and Lord Byron also lived there. It is interesting that Venice still looks like it did in its heyday. It is precisely this quality of a "living monument" in the eyes of i imagination of tourists from all meridians makes it one of the most desirable tourist destinations. An incredible 55,000 tourists stay in this city every day, out of a total of about 270,000 inhabitants.

Tourists generally do not miss the opportunity to visit the Doge's Palace (the residence of the Doge - the ruler of the Republic of Venice), the Bridge of Sighs and the Church of Saint Mark, with its 175-meter long and luxurious space and 99-meter high bell tower (Campanile), as well as numerous other churches, museums and galleries. The main navigable artery and thoroughfare of Venice is the Grand Canal, which divides the city into two parts, cutting it in the shape of a huge letter S in a length of almost 4 kilometers. A romantic ride along this canal on one of the 400 gondolas still attracts visitors from various countries. Venice is also known for events such as the Venice Masquerade Ball, the International Film Festival and the Venice Biennale.

At the end of this short story, another curiosity: the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) got its name in the 19th century from the sighs of prisoners who, crossing the bridge to the prison cells in the neighboring building, could once again look at the lagoon and the island of St. George. Only the great seducer Casanova managed to escape from this prison, and to this day it has not been discovered how he did it."
