Calendar for 8. August - Venerable Martyr Paraskeva
Born in Rome, of Christian parents. When her parents passed away, she gave away all her possessions to the poor and became a monk. As a nun, she zealously and with great zeal preached Christ the Living God, not hiding, even though she lived in a time of bloody persecution of Christians. On the accusation of the Roman Jews, she was brought before the emperor Antoninus, who tried to sway her in her faith in Christ with flattery. Then they put a red-hot helmet on her head, but God miraculously saved her, and she left Rome. In two more cities, she was brought before the judges and tortured, but by the power of God she quickly recovered, performing great miracles. At last one Tarasius cut her with a sword. Saint Paraskeva suffered for Christ God in the 2nd century.
