Calendar for April 20 Venerable George the Confessor – Pobusani Monday
Because of the great virtues he gained through long asceticism, this George was chosen and appointed Metropolitan of Mytilene. And the saint governed the flock of the clergy zealously and wisely until his old age. But when persecution arose under Leo the Armenian, who was destroying the holy icons, this holy elder was summoned by the emperor to Constantinople to a council of bishops, which was to, according to the emperor's wish, destroy icon veneration. But George not only did not act according to the wishes of the evil emperor, but, together with some other brave bishops, he rose up in defense of the holy icons. For this, he was mocked and exiled by the emperor to the regions of Cherson, where he spent the rest of his earthly life in bodily misery and every kind of trouble. He died and passed away to immortal life around 816. He was a miracle worker both during his life and after his death because of his great righteousness and love for the Lord Jesus.
