Calendar for April 21 The Holy Apostles Herodion, Agabus, Rufus, Asyncritus, Phlegon and Hermes

They were all among the Seventy Apostles. The Apostle Paul mentions them all in his epistles. Herodion was a relative of Paul. Greet, Paul writes to the Romans, Herodion my relative (16:11). Herodion suffered greatly from the Jews as bishop of Neopatrion: they beat him on the head with rods, they struck him on the mouth with stones, they stabbed him with knives. And when they left him for dead, Saint Herodion rose and continued to serve the apostles. In Rome, he helped the Apostle Peter, and was beheaded with many other Christians on the same day that Peter was crucified. Saint Agabus had a prophetic spirit. Two of his prophecies are mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. First, he prophesied a great famine throughout the world, which actually happened during the time of Caesar Claudius. And second, when he met in Caesarea with the Apostle Paul, who was on his way to Jerusalem, Agabus took Paul's belt and bound his own hands and feet, saying: Thus says the Holy Spirit: The man to whom this belt belongs, so the Jews will bind him in Jerusalem (21:11). St. Rufus was bishop of Thebes in Greece. The Apostle Paul also mentions him: Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord (Rom. 16:13). He was bishop in Hyrcania in Asia. St. Phlegon, who is mentioned in the same place, was bishop in the Thracian city of Marathon. St. Hermes, mentioned with the others, was bishop in Dalmatia. All of them, like bees of Christ, spread the honey of the Gospel to various regions, suffering much for the love of Christ. They all moved to the eternal kingdom of the beloved Christ.

Saint Niphon, Bishop of Novgorod. Saint Celestine, Pope of Rome.
