Calendar for August 10 Holy Apostles and Deacons Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon and Parmenas
All four are from the number of 7 deacons and 70 apostles. The other deacons were Stephen, Philip and Nicholas. The First Martyr Stephen and Philip are celebrated on special days, and Nicholas was not canonized because of his heresy. Prochorus was ordained Bishop of Nicomedia by the Apostle Peter. He served for some time with Saint John the Theologian on the island of Patmos and recorded the Revelation, which he heard from his mouth. He was killed by infidels in Antioch. Nicanor suffered in Jerusalem, on the same day as Archdeacon Stephen, and soon after him another 2,000 Christians, who were killed by the Jews. Timon was a bishop in Arabia where he was crucified, and Parmenos died before the apostles who mourned and buried him.
