Calendar for August 15 - Transfer of the relics of the Holy First Martyr and Archdeacon Stefan
When the Jews stoned Saint Stephen to death, they left his body to the dogs. That is how the body of the First Martyr of Christ lay for two days and a night. Then Gamalil, a secret disciple of Christ and teacher of the Apostle Paul, came and took the body of Archdeacon Stephen to his estate in Kafargamal and buried him there in a cave. There he also buried his friend Nikodim, who died crying over Stefan, and his baptized son Aviv; Gamalil was also buried there. No one knew where the grave of Saint Stephen was. And then, in 415, Gamalil appeared three times in a dream to the Kafargamal priest Lucian and told him where the four of them were buried. Then the relics of Saint Stephen were transferred to Sion, and later to Constantinople. Many healings have taken place from them.
