Calendar for August 18 The Holy Martyr Eusignius – (Pre-Feast of the Transfiguration)
He was a soldier under Emperor Maximian, Emperor Constantine the Great and his sons. He was present at the torture of Saint Basiliscus and saw the Lord receiving his soul from an angel. He also saw the cross that appeared to Saint Constantine. After 60 years of military service, he retired to his birthplace in Antioch, where he spent his life in fasting and prayer. During the time of Julian the Apostate, two quarreling men took him as a judge. He ruled in favor of the right, while the other accused him of being a Christian. Emperor Eusignius summoned him to court, but he strongly rebuked him for his apostasy from the faith and rebuked him with the wonderful example of Constantine the Great. The emperor ordered his head to be cut off. Saint Eusignius suffered in 362, in great old age.
