Calendar for August 20 The Venerable Martyr Dometius
He was born in Persia as a pagan, during the time of Emperor Constantine. He learned the teachings of Christ in his youth, when he was baptized. Soon he went to a monastery near the city of Nisivea and became a monk. For some time he lived in the brotherhood, and then he withdrew to a place of silence, to the house of Archimandrite Nurvel, who is said to have eaten nothing cooked for 60 years. Elder Nurvel ordained him a deacon, and when he wanted to ordain him to the priesthood, he fled to the desert and settled in a cave. He received from God the gift of healing. When Julian the Apostate came to those parts, he heard about this ascetic and sent people who, together with two of his disciples, walled him up alive in a cave. Saint Dometius ended his earthly life in the year 363.
