Calendar for August 21 Saint Emilian the Confessor
Through his ascetic life, he earned the rank of bishop and was appointed bishop of Cyzicus, on Arktonis, a peninsula on the Sea of Marmara. During the reign of the iconoclastic Emperor Leo the Armenian, he suffered many sufferings. He was forced many times to renounce the veneration of holy icons, but he did not want to obey the imperial decrees, but remained steadfastly faithful to the teachings of the Holy Fathers. At a meeting of bishops, headed by the patriarch, in the palace of Emperor Leo, who advocated iconoclasm, he was the first to speak out, demanding that church issues be resolved within the Church. He was exiled, along with other Orthodox bishops. He spent 5 years in exile, enduring many torments and humiliations for the sake of Christ. He reposed in the Lord in the year 820.
